Prithwiraj Maitra, PhD, Vice President of Global Skincare R&D at Allergan Aesthetics, gave his thoughts on regenerative aesthetics and other recent skincare advancements.

In a recent interview with Dermatology Times, Prithwiraj Maitra, PhD, Vice President of Global Skincare R&D at Allergan Aesthetics, shared insights on the evolving science of regenerative aesthetics in skin health. With 25 years of experience, he emphasized the importance of innovative approaches that combine in-office and at-home treatments to improve skin quality and combat aging.

Maitra described regenerative aesthetics as a transformative field focused on harnessing the body’s natural repair mechanisms to rejuvenate the skin. Unlike traditional cosmetic methods that often mask aging signs, regenerative aesthetics aims for a more natural, sustained improvement. He noted that this approach is gaining popularity due to consumer demand for minimally invasive procedures that enhance appearance subtly but effectively. These treatments address both intrinsic and extrinsic aging by stimulating biological repair and regeneration.

“Regenerative aesthetics offers an opportunity to provide that subtle yet noticeable improvement that can be sustainable over time,” Maitra said.

Maitra also highlighted the growing consumer interest in at-home, evidence-based solutions that complement professional treatments, such as growth factor skincare. He pointed to SkinMedica, a brand under Allergan Aesthetics, as a pioneer in this space. For over 2 decades, SkinMedica has focused on formulating potent at-home skincare products that support in-office aesthetic results.

Central to this innovation is the science of the secretome—the collection of bioactive molecules secreted by young, healthy skin cells. As aging disrupts the skin’s biological “symphony,” the production of these essential molecules declines, contributing to visible signs of aging.

“[When] this perfect harmony and symphony of biological processes gets impaired, there's a decline of essential growth factors, proteins, and peptides in the skin,” Maitra said.

Maitra explained that certain product formulations from SkinMedica and other brands are designed to restore this harmony by delivering targeted growth factors that activate skin regeneration pathways, mimicking the signaling cascade of youthful skin. This allows dermatologists to create personalized, biologically inspired treatments that can enhance patients’ skin health and appearance with long-term benefits. With continued research and innovation from Maitra and other leaders in the field, this approach is set to redefine anti-aging skincare both in the clinic and at home.
