While products like growth factor skincare already have demonstrated benefits, this is only the beginning, according to Prithwiraj Maitra, PhD.

In a continuing conversation with Dermatology Times, Prithwiraj Maitra, PhD, Vice President of Global Skincare R&D at Allergan Aesthetics, expanded on the evolving benefits and bright future of regenerative aesthetics and growth factor skincare for both patients and dermatologists.

In the short term, patients using regenerative skincare products can expect improved hydration, smoother texture, and a reduction in visible redness. Over time, these effects deepen, with noticeable improvements in skin firmness, reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and overall skin rejuvenation. One example of an effective at-home treatment is SkinMedica’s TNS Advanced+ Serum, which is clinically proven to enhance smoothness and reduce fine lines. It is also the only growth factor skincare product shown to improve the appearance of sagging skin.

Looking ahead at what’s next for regenerative aesthetics, it is both thrilling and foundational, according to Maitra. Although many advancements are happening, Allergan is working to further understand the fundamentals of this technology, as it is only the beginning.

“I think the future is exciting, but there's a lot that we need to learn, not only for improving skin appearance but also overall skin health,” Maitra noted.

While significant progress has been made, he acknowledged that the industry is still in its early stages of understanding how skin ages on a biological level. The company is making major investments in this area, conducting both internal research and partnering with external experts.

One key initiative is the “Beneath the Surface: Scientific Symposium,” which brings together dermatologists, scientists, and key opinion leaders to explore critical topics such as skin longevity, medical weight loss, and diversity in pigmentation, so we can understand how regenerative aesthetics can be applied to these. Maitra also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in identifying aging biomarkers and personalizing treatment approaches.

Maitra underscored the importance of evidence-based science and transparent patient education in the field of regenerative aesthetics. Through initiatives like the Allergan Medical Institute, providers are being trained to better communicate the science behind these therapies and manage patient expectations amid a landscape increasingly influenced by social media and misinformation. With continued research and education, regenerative aesthetics is poised to significantly advance both skin health and aesthetic outcomes.
