“Cultivating the Next Generation: How to Become a Mentor,”

 emphasizing mentorship as a foundational element of professional growth in clinical dermatology.

 Far from being a peripheral subject, Miller posited that mentorship is essential to closing the knowledge gap left by formal education and is key to strengthening the dermatology profession at large.

Miller’s central thesis is that mentorship should not be optional—it is necessary. She stressed that traditional schooling for PAs and NPs does not adequately prepare clinicians for the complexities of dermatologic care. Mentorship, therefore, serves a dual function: it bridges the educational divide and fosters continuity and trust within the clinical community. When seasoned professionals share their knowledge and experience with newcomers, it not only improves patient care outcomes but also contributes to standardizing high-quality practices across the field.

For mentees, the benefits of mentorship are numerous. It accelerates the clinical learning curve by offering real-time access to expert insights, provides networking opportunities otherwise unavailable to newer professionals, and boosts confidence in both clinical and interpersonal settings. Miller emphasized that confidence plays a vital role in patient interactions, and that patients often sense a provider’s self-assuredness—or lack thereof. A strong mentoring relationship can significantly contribute to a clinician’s sense of preparedness and assurance in clinical decision-making.

On the other side of the equation, mentors derive value from the relationship as well. Mentorship helps them maintain up-to-date knowledge and refines their clinical reasoning by requiring them to articulate and defend their practices. It also offers personal fulfillment and a renewed sense of purpose. Miller likened the act of mentoring to the joy of giving gifts, describing it as profoundly rewarding to watch someone else achieve a career goal thanks to one's guidance.

Importantly, Miller dispelled the notion that mentorship is reserved for elite or senior practitioners. She encouraged all professionals—regardless of title or years in practice—to consider mentoring, asserting that everyone has unique experiences and insights to offer. Accessibility is key; informal mentorship can be as simple as offering to review a resume, answer clinical questions via email, or introduce a colleague to a relevant industry contact.

She acknowledged, however, that mentorship does come with challenges. Time constraints and the potential for burnout are real concerns, particularly in demanding clinical environments. To address this, Miller advised prospective mentors to set clear expectations and boundaries from the outset. Mentorship need not be time-intensive or formalized; it can be flexible and shaped to fit the mentor’s capacity.

Miller also explored the ripple effect of mentorship, illustrating how one supportive interaction can reverberate through a mentee’s career and beyond. Using her own experience as an example, she recounted how a mentor’s early encouragement steered her toward specialization in psoriatic disease and opened leadership opportunities within the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA). Her trajectory, in turn, enabled her to mentor others—further amplifying the original act of support.

Concluding her presentation with the mantra “leave the ladder down,” Miller issued a call to action: choose 1 person this year to mentor, however informally. Likewise, she encouraged mentees to proactively seek guidance, noting that respect and admiration are often reciprocated with generosity and insight. Her parting advice, “You don’t get what you don’t ask for,” encapsulates the proactive mindset that both mentors and mentees must adopt to cultivate meaningful, career-advancing relationships.

In sum, Lauren Miller’s address underscored mentorship as not only a professional responsibility but also a strategic tool for cultivating a resilient, skilled, and compassionate clinical workforce. As the dermatology field continues to evolve, mentorship will remain a cornerstone of sustainable professional development and leadership cultivation.

Leave the Ladder Down: The Power of Mentoring

In early 2025, significant changes in federal research funding policies have introduced uncertainty for the medical research community, including dermatology. These developments may impact clinical trials, translational research, and the training of future physician-scientists.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) implemented a policy capping indirect cost reimbursements at 15%, down from previous rates that often exceeded 50%.

 Although a federal judge temporarily blocked this policy following legal challenges, many institutions have already initiated hiring freezes, reduced graduate admissions, and paused research projects.

Effective January 25, 2025, the NIH introduced a simplified peer review framework for research project grants, fellowships, and training grants.

 These changes aim to streamline the application process and promote fairness by focusing on key assessments such as candidate potential and research training plans.

The NIH has ended funding for programs related to climate change and health, reflecting a shift in research priorities.

 Additionally, Notices of Funding Opportunities related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and health disparities have been removed, raising concerns about the future direction of NIH-funded research.

 shared her commitment to expanding support and educational resources for dermatology NPs and PAs through the revamped SDNP.

Caldwell is enthusiastic about increasing NP engagement in research and education through SDNP. The organization is actively developing partnerships with journals to help members navigate the process of publishing. With a dedicated team behind her, she encourages NPs to reach out and share their goals, interests, and dreams so the organization can provide guidance. In addition to research, SDNP is building out educational tools, including resources on textbooks, apps, and continuing education opportunities. A key initiative under her leadership is to modernize and humanize SDNP, emphasizing accessibility through social media, peer support, and a stronger digital presence.

She also highlights the welcoming, supportive nature of SDNP, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the organization and are considering getting involved. Having discovered SDNP only 3 years ago, Caldwell recalled how attending her first SDNP conference as an introverted newcomer inspired her to become a volunteer.

“I felt welcomed and at home. And I met so many wonderful people across the whole US that I keep in touch with,” she said. “And so instantly after that conference, I felt really empowered and said, ‘OK, I'm ready to change the world. What can I do?’”

Importantly, Caldwell emphasized that SDNP isn’t just for members. Free monthly webinars, open conference access, and strong interprofessional collaboration, including support from physicians, make the organization a valuable resource for NPs and PAs of any level. She believes that thanks to their nursing background, NPs bring a holistic, patient-centered approach to dermatology, which is particularly essential in underserved areas. Caldwell recognizes this and invites all NPs to get involved, take advantage of the resources, and find an empowered community of peers through SDNP.

“It's contagious, it's infectious, and so if you just give it a chance and see, I think we would have everyone hooked,” Caldwell concluded.

From Patient to President: Amanda Caldwell, MSN, APRN-C, And Her Journey with SDNP

Amanda Caldwell, MSN, APRN-C, a dermatology nurse practitioner at US Dermatology Partners, has recently stepped into her role as president of the 

Society for Dermatology Nurse Practitioners (SDNP)

. With a passion for accessible health care and general dermatology, Caldwell brings both personal and professional motivation to her leadership. Having battled skin cancer at age 23, along with other dermatological conditions, her early experience with the specialty drove her commitment to dermatologic care. Caldwell’s vision as president centers on expanding access to high-quality education and career support, not just for nurse practitioners (NPs) but for physician assistants (PAs) as well.

“We're continuing to grow, and I want to be the home for NP dermatology practitioners, but also, we welcome our physician assistant friends too...we’re stronger together,” she emphasized.

Her team’s initiatives include offering free monthly webinars, comprehensive review courses, and new member engagement efforts as part of an SDNP rebrand. She is especially focused on listening to member needs and filling the gaps in the industry, whether it's helping find jobs, working with collaborators, or navigating practice authority.

Caldwell credits much of her professional growth to mentorship, particularly from Christy Parham, MD, MPH, MA, who encouraged her to become a provider, and Mark Fleischman, MD, FAAD, her collaborator at US Dermatology Partners. On a personal level, her mother remains a key source of inspiration. After the sudden loss of Caldwell’s father when she was 12 years old, her mother worked full time and earned a college degree while raising four children, instilling resilience and purpose in Caldwell’s journey.

Among the top issues facing dermatology NPs today, Caldwell identifies limited access to education, unequal pay, and difficulty finding employment in the specialty. She advocates for equal compensation, noting that many NPs practice independently in full practice authority states and manage complex conditions such as autoimmune diseases. Caldwell also aims to boost SDNP’s networking power to connect NPs with job opportunities. Through her leadership, SDNP hopes to reduce barriers and foster professional growth in dermatologic practice.

Above all, she is focused on building a supportive, inclusive home for dermatology NPs and PAs.
“To me, especially with patients and even myself, I think being relatable is important,” Caldwell said. “We're in this world together. Let's help each other out, and if someone knows I've kind of walked in their shoes, it definitely helps build some trust.”

, Julia Zimmermann, PD, PHD, a biophysicist, medical researcher, CEO of terraplasma, and Managing Director of hyped about science shared the journey behind the groundbreaking cold plasma skin care device, PHLAS. Originally developed through scientific research at the Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and advanced through clinical collaborations, the PHLAS device represents a fusion of cutting-edge technology with dermatological care.

Revolutionizing Acne Treatments and Skin Care with Cold Plasma Technology

The cold atmospheric plasma technology, particularly using surface micro-discharge (SMD), has been rigorously studied since 2009. Research from the University Clinic of Regensburg and Dermatest demonstrated strong efficacy in inactivating acne-causing bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes. Clinical trials across Europe have supported PHLAS’s benefits for acne-prone skin, including reduced redness, refined pores, and fewer blemishes—all with a strong safety profile.

Developing PHLAS for at-home use, however, presented substantial challenges. Early prototypes were bulky and used complex systems like argon gas and microwave technology. To create a compact, consumer-friendly version, the team miniaturized components and engineered a safe, high-voltage system internally, necessitating custom electronics. But Zimmermann emphasized the biggest hurdle was public unfamiliarity.

“The biggest challenge is that nobody knows cold plasma,” she noted. “Nobody knows what it is, and we have to go out and explain what a cold plasma is to everybody. Nobody knows the benefits.”

PHLAS is unique among skincare devices, according to Zimmermann. Unlike most creams or liquids, plasma, a partially ionized gas, can penetrate pores deeply without additives. It mimics immune system responses, offering a natural, non-invasive treatment alternative. Zimmermann positions it as a professional-grade technology adapted for personal use. For dermatologists and clinicians, Zimmermann recommends PHLAS for patients struggling with acne, redness, and skin inflammation. The device is hygienic with exchangeable tips and designed for daily use after normal cleansing.

Looking ahead, terraplasma and hyped about science are launching PHLAS to the US market 

. Future innovations may include plasma-compatible creams to enhance treatment absorption, which aligns with Zimmermann’s broader vision of revolutionizing skincare through science.
