Beyond the Surface: Walter Liszewski, MD, on New Frontiers in Chronic Skin Conditions

“To my dermatology colleagues out there, read about the studies, read the papers, see the videos. There's so much we can do,” Walter Liszewski, MD, said in an exclusive interview at Elevate-Derm Summer 2025.

Liszewski, a board-certified dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, shared insights into his current research and emerging dermatologic therapies. With a career devoted to managing patients with challenging itch and rash conditions, he emphasized the importance of consumer safety and advocacy in allergy research.

Reviewing Hemangiomas and Capillary Malformations and their Associated Risks

“There are new clinical guidelines for hemangiomas. The bottom line is, get them into treatment as soon as possible....The reason for that is because we have this very short window to treat because we know hemangiomas grow so rapidly in the first part of life,” said Jim Treat, MD, at the 2025 Elevate-Derm Summer Conference in Park City, Utah.

Treat, a board-certified dermatologist and professor of clinical pediatric and dermatology at the Dermatology Section at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, presented “Hemangiomas and Vascular Anomalies” at the 4-day NP/PA conference. Treat opened his session by addressing diagnostic tools for hemangiomas, which, in the case of ultrasounds, are not always the most specific.

Insights on Pathology, Biopsy, and Patient Understanding

Ata Moshiri, MD, MPH, FAAD, assistant professor of dermatology and dermatopathology at NYU Langone in New York City, shared key insights from 2 sessions he led at the Elevate-Derm Summer Conference 2025 in Park City, Utah, focusing on pathology interpretation and patient communication.

In his session, “Understanding Pathology Results,” Moshiri emphasized that pathology is not an absolute truth but an informed interpretation based on tissue patterns. Just as clinical notes vary by clinician, pathology reports can differ between pathologists. He stressed the importance of strong communication between dermatologists and pathologists to ensure accurate diagnosis and patient care.
